Basecamp has a open source sister

Not to long ago I was looking out for a good open source project management software for a friend. He was using Basecamp, but did not like it, cause it was not free software and working for a organization which really pushes for free software, he was in the market looking for alternatives. This is when I stumbled on something called ActiveCollab.

ActiveCollab is written in PHP5 and uses MySQL as a backend, I have not had the time to look under the hood. I have not had any unsuspected issues yet with it. Although it still feels like Basecamp 2005'. There is no AJAX, just a little JavaScript here and there. But the road map seems bright. I have also heard a lot of developers are interested in helping the project out. A while back a friend of mine, told me he and some friends at Stanford were developing a GPLed version of Basecamp written in Python, they did not use DJango but instead wrote their own framework.

Software Patents in India

A "while back":http://www.hyperionreactor.net/node/19 I was in Delhi, with Richard Stallman. "FSF India":http://www.fsf.org.in and the "CPIM":http://www.cpim.com were working together on the removal of software patent.

A friend just sent me the url that we have finally succeeded in doing so :) I am really happy for this, and glad that I was a part of this.

You can read the whole article "here":http://pd.cpim.org/2005/0403/04032005_snd.htm

The news was even slashdotted a while back you can read about it "here":http://yro.slashdot.org/yro/05/04/20/2311255.shtml?tid=155&tid=219

GNUnify 2005'

Finally I made it to GNUnify! My scheduled talks are on "Getting involved in the FLOSS Movement". I really hope it goes good since I did not have the time to make a presentation or even come up with the points to speak about. But I did manage to scribble down something on my way over here.

Hoping to give a join talk on "Ruby":http://www.ruby-lang.org with "Premshree":http://www.livejournal.com/~premshree/ may be if i get some time even talk about "Ruby On Rails":http://www.rubyonrails.org.

*Update*
Oh the talks were tooo awesome. It started off a bit slow with only 10 people attending the "Ruby":http://www.ruby-lang.org talk but later for the "Getting involved in the FLOSS Movement" we had nearly 60-70 people.

Stallman at the Indian International Center

Today "Richard Stallman":http://www.stallman.org and I were at the India Internation center. Vandhana Shiva and a couple other organizations and political parties organized a meeting to counter the Patents issue that India is faced with currently.

"Stallman":http://www.stallman.org and I were there to shed light on the issue of software idea patents. We also talked about how if software idea patents would affect the growth of the entire country.
