Basecamp has a open source sister

Not to long ago I was looking out for a good open source project management software for a friend. He was using Basecamp, but did not like it, cause it was not free software and working for a organization which really pushes for free software, he was in the market looking for alternatives. This is when I stumbled on something called ActiveCollab.

ActiveCollab is written in PHP5 and uses MySQL as a backend, I have not had the time to look under the hood. I have not had any unsuspected issues yet with it. Although it still feels like Basecamp 2005'. There is no AJAX, just a little JavaScript here and there. But the road map seems bright. I have also heard a lot of developers are interested in helping the project out. A while back a friend of mine, told me he and some friends at Stanford were developing a GPLed version of Basecamp written in Python, they did not use DJango but instead wrote their own framework.

I havent seen this project do any thing new, or add any new features. It a simple clone of Basecamp. Version 0.7 is going to be out soon.

Some of the things to come out in 0.8:
* Yet another PHP Framework
* API
* Plugin Support ( Looking forward to see how this works )
* Themes, Translations and more.

*Update:* The framework looks identical to Ruby on Rails. Wonder how long he took to write the entire thing.

How long?

It took me somewhere about 2 weeks to get everything in functional state (had some pretty good code already). I tweak it whenever I need something that isn't already in the framework ever since, but that are usually just some small updates.

...not anymore

It looks like activeCollab will no longer be free open-source software. Just like basecamp, they'll have a free version and a payed version.

ProjectPier looks more of a

ProjectPier looks more of a better alternative. It has almost the same look and feel.
