Alternatives to Basecamp and ActiveCollab

It was sad to see ActiveCollab go close source, after being hailed as the next (open source) killer app. I do not blame Ilja for his decision. But yet again we are left with another hosted solution. I still do recommend ActiveCollab if you can spare a few hundred dollars ($200 for small business and $400 for a corporate license). This includes the source code, unlimited user and a perpetual license.

I introduce Collabtive another project management application. The project is written in PHP and uses the prototype/script.aculo.us javascript framework for effects and all the other goodies we have come to love. I havent had time to look under the hood.

The project still feels like its in its infancy, but like other opensource projects I am sure there will be developers that extend the platform to suite their needs and contribute the code back to the community. All said I still do miss the old ActiveCollab.

Some of the features I would like to experiment with is LDAP integration since we use Zimbra at work I would like to hook this into my existing LDAP server. Some of the features that are being worked on are Microsoft Project and Basecamp import. It would also be nice to see an integration with OpenProj.

One feature that all the project management applications lack is resource management. I feel this is an obvious feature since most of us work on multiple projects at any given time.

Spare five minutes and take if for a run. Do leave me a comment if you find this better than ActiveCollab.

If you are willing to go

If you are willing to go web-based, another alternative worth exploring is Intervals. But if you are going the open source route, I would stick with Collabtiv or check out Trac.

Collabtiv looks interesting

Collabtiv looks interesting for project management. You might also check out GeniusRoom (it has more of a communications focus). Basecamp seems like the default choice out there, but it doesn't look like they're going to add any of the real-time presentation stuff.

Have you tried projectpier?

If we talk about alternatives, you can also take a look at BUGtrack
Why I recommend it? The answer is simple workflow and communication oriented system.
Besides, you can be up and running in a couple of days.

I really believe that ActiveCollab is a bit pricy and Basecamp lacks a lot features that project managers need, as one more alternative you could check out our tool - http://www.comindwork.com
